Honeycomb Paper Wrap vs Bubble Wrap: Which Is Better for Fragile Shipping?

The short answer

For most Indian e-commerce shipments — cosmetics, glassware, ceramics, small electronics, jewellery — honeycomb paper is the better choice. It protects as well as bubble wrap for typical fragile items, takes up a fraction of the storage space, needs no tape, and is fully recyclable.

Bubble wrap still wins in two cases: when you need a genuine moisture barrier, and for very heavy items where trapped air depth gives it a slight edge on concentrated impact.

If you're shipping fragile goods in India today and you want one material for 90% of your parcels, that material is honeycomb paper.

What each material actually is

Honeycomb paper is kraft paper die-cut in a hexagonal pattern. Pull it and it expands into a three-dimensional mesh. The hexagons grip each other, so the wrap locks around the product without tape, scissors, or a dispenser. Tear it off the roll and pack.

ReGenPack honeycomb is made from 100% recycled kraft at 80–90 GSM, with a burst factor of 24–30+ BF. That burst factor is the number that matters — it's the measured strength of the finished honeycomb after forming, and it's what separates a wrap that holds a 2 kg ceramic vase from one that tears on the packing floor.

Bubble wrap is two layers of polyethylene film with air trapped between them. It has protected fragile goods for sixty years and it does the job. It is also plastic, it arrives pre-inflated, and it takes up enormous space in your warehouse relative to what it protects.

Protection: an honest comparison

Bubble wrap's air pockets absorb sharp, concentrated impacts slightly better. That's physics — trapped air has more give than folded paper at the same thickness.

But for the overwhelming majority of e-commerce parcels, that margin never comes into play. What actually damages goods in Indian transit is not one dramatic drop. It's repeated compression in a loaded truck, shifting inside an under-filled box, and edge impacts during sorting.

Honeycomb paper handles all three well, for one structural reason: it locks around the product. Bubble wrap taped around a bottle can slide. Honeycomb mesh grips the shape and stays where you put it. It also doubles as void fill inside the carton — one material instead of two.

Where bubble wrap genuinely wins:

• Moisture. Paper is not a moisture barrier. If your product must survive monsoon transit or cold-chain condensation, use a poly bag inside the honeycomb, or use bubble wrap.
• Very heavy, very delicate items. A 15 kg marble sculpture is a bubble wrap job, possibly foam.
• Sharp protruding edges. Anything that could puncture through paper needs a layer of something else first.

Anyone telling you honeycomb paper beats bubble wrap in every situation is selling, not advising. It doesn't. It wins on about nine parcels in ten.

Cost: how to compare them properly

Most comparisons stop at the price per running metre. That's the wrong number, and it's why honeycomb paper often looks more expensive than it turns out to be.

The number that matters is cost per parcel shipped. Work it out for your own products: wrap ten real orders, measure how much material each one takes, and divide.

Bubble wrap usually looks cheaper at the counter. Three costs it hides:

1. Tape. Every bubble wrap parcel needs it. Honeycomb needs none.
2. Storage. Bubble wrap is mostly air. A flat honeycomb roll holds far more protective material in the same shelf space — real money if you rent warehouse area.
3. Volumetric weight. Bubble wrap adds bulk, which pushes parcels into higher courier weight slabs. Honeycomb conforms tightly to the product, so the same item often fits a smaller box.

That third one is the big one. Indian couriers bill on volumetric weight. If honeycomb lets you drop one box size across a few hundred monthly shipments, the freight saving alone can exceed the entire material cost difference.

Also: buying from a GST-registered manufacturer means the 18% GST on your packaging is claimable as input tax credit. Buying from an unregistered local trader means it isn't. That's an 18% swing that never appears in a price comparison.

Storage and warehouse efficiency

This is the argument packing-floor managers respond to fastest.

Bubble wrap arrives inflated. You pay to store air. A month's supply can occupy an entire rack.

Honeycomb paper ships flat and expands only when pulled, at the moment of use. The same protective coverage occupies roughly a fifth of the shelf space. For a small warehouse or a home-run D2C operation, that difference is the whole decision.

Sustainability — the accurate version

ReGenPack honeycomb is made from 100% recycled kraft and is fully recyclable again. It goes into your customer's normal paper waste. No separate stream, no special facility, no instructions on the box.

We say recyclable, not biodegradable. Biodegradability is a specific certified claim and we don't hold that certification, so we don't make it. Recyclable is true, defensible, and does the job.

Bubble wrap is LDPE. It is technically recyclable and almost never actually recycled, because kerbside systems don't take soft plastic film. In practice it goes to landfill.

There's a commercial angle here beyond conscience. If you sell to customers who care about plastic — skincare, wellness, artisan goods, premium gifting — plastic-free packaging is part of the product. And if you supply corporate buyers, more of them are now asking about packaging waste in their procurement questions.

The unboxing experience

Bubble wrap is functional and forgettable. Kraft honeycomb mesh looks deliberate. It photographs well, and customers who unbox on camera treat it as part of the product rather than as rubbish to discard.

Bubble wrap cannot carry your brand. Honeycomb paper can.

White labelling: put your own brand on the roll

Which should you choose?

Choose honeycomb paper if you ship: cosmetics and skincare, glassware and ceramics, candles, jewellery, small electronics, pharma cartons, auto parts, artisan and gift items, or anything where the unboxing matters.

Choose bubble wrap if you ship: anything needing a real moisture barrier, very heavy delicate items over roughly 10 kg, or products with sharp protruding edges.

Use both if: you have a mixed catalogue. Honeycomb as the default wrap, bubble wrap held back for the small subset that needs it. Most fulfilment centres end up here.

Frequently asked questions

Does honeycomb paper protect as well as bubble wrap?

For typical fragile e-commerce items, yes. Bubble wrap has a slight edge on very high-energy concentrated impacts. For the shipments most Indian sellers actually send, the difference doesn't show up in damage rates.

Do I need a machine or dispenser?

No. Pull it off the roll by hand, wrap, tear. No tape, no scissors, no equipment.

Is honeycomb paper more expensive than bubble wrap?

Per running metre it can be. Per parcel shipped it often isn't, once you count tape, storage space, and the volumetric weight saving from a smaller box. Compare cost per parcel, not cost per metre.

What GSM and burst factor should I look for?

80–90 GSM and 24+ BF is a sound minimum for fragile goods. Thin, low-BF honeycomb tears on the packing floor and is the main reason people try the material once and give up. Ask any supplier for both numbers. If they can't tell you, they don't make it.

Is it actually recyclable in India?

Yes. It's kraft paper and goes with ordinary paper waste. No separate collection needed.

Can I get my logo printed on it?
