How to Buy Honeycomb Paper in India: Price, GSM and Quality Checklist

Short answer: Judge honeycomb paper by what it costs to pack one parcel safely, not by the price of the roll. Before you buy, check four things: the price per square metre, whether the length quoted is flat or stretched, the GSM and burst factor in writing, and how the paper performs on your own products in a trial. For most fragile e-commerce shipments, 80–90 GSM kraft is the common choice.

How to compare honeycomb paper prices: use price per square metre

Rolls are sold in many widths (250 mm, 380 mm, 500 mm and more) and lengths (50 m to 250 m). Comparing price per roll, or even price per metre, will mislead you. Use this formula:

Price per square metre = Roll price ÷ (Width in metres × Length in metres)

Example: a 500 mm × 100 m roll has 0.5 × 100 = 50 square metres of paper. If it costs ₹600, that is ₹600 ÷ 50 = ₹12 per square metre.

A 250 mm × 100 m roll has only 25 square metres. Narrow rolls almost always cost more per square metre, because slitting, cores and packing cost about the same for less paper. That doesn't make them worse value. If your products are small, a narrow roll wastes less paper.

7 things that change the price of honeycomb paper

  1. Paper weight (GSM). Heavier paper costs more. Most honeycomb wrap for fragile shipping is 80–90 GSM. Lighter paper is cheaper but tears more easily while expanding.
  2. Paper strength (burst factor). Two rolls can have the same GSM but very different strength. Burst factor (BF) tells you how much pressure the paper takes before it bursts. Higher BF paper costs more.
  3. Flat length vs stretched length. Honeycomb paper gets longer when you pull it. Some sellers quote the stretched length, which makes a roll look bigger than it is. Always ask which length is quoted.
  4. Width. Wider rolls give you more paper per rupee. Narrow rolls are easier to handle on a small packing table.
  5. Roll length. Longer rolls cost less per square metre, but you pay more upfront.
  6. GST and delivery. Some prices you see exclude GST and freight. Compare the final landed price, not the listed price.
  7. Printing. A logo printed on the roll adds a one-time plate charge and ink cost.

Why the cheapest roll can cost you more

You don't buy honeycomb paper by the square metre. You use it by the parcel. If weaker paper tears while you stretch it, or flattens under a heavy item, your team wraps an extra layer to feel safe. That extra layer can wipe out the saving.

A simple example (for illustration only): Roll A costs ₹10 per square metre, but the packer needs 3 layers per item. Roll B costs ₹12 per square metre and does the job in 2 layers. Roll A costs ₹30 worth of paper per item. Roll B costs ₹24. The "cheaper" roll is 25% more expensive per parcel, before you count a single breakage or replacement shipment.

So the real question is not "what is the price per roll?" It is "what does it cost me to pack one parcel safely?"

Quality checklist: what to check before you buy

  • Ask for GSM and burst factor in writing. A serious supplier will state both on the quote or invoice.
  • Ask whether the length is flat or stretched. Compare rolls on the same basis.
  • Do a pull test. Pull 1 metre open firmly by hand. Good paper opens into an even mesh. Weak paper tears at the thin links between the cells.
  • Do a press test. Wrap a heavy mug in 2 layers and press down on it with your palm. Good paper springs back. Weak paper flattens and stays flat.
  • Check consistency. Ask whether every roll is made to the same paper spec, so your team gets the same yield per parcel every time you reorder.
  • Ask for a GST invoice. If you are GST-registered, a proper tax invoice lets you claim input tax credit.
  • Test a trial roll on your real products before you order in bulk.

Which width should you buy?

  • 250 mm (10 inch): best for small items packed on a desk, such as cosmetics, jewellery, skincare, gifts and small electronics.
  • 500 mm (20 inch): best for larger items and daily warehouse packing, such as glassware, ceramics, pharma, electronics and auto parts. It gives the lowest cost per square metre.

Frequently asked questions

What decides the price of honeycomb paper in India?
Mainly the paper weight (GSM), paper strength (burst factor), roll width and length, and whether GST and delivery are included. Compare rolls per square metre, on the same flat length, to get a fair picture.

Is a 500 mm roll cheaper than a 250 mm roll?
Per square metre, yes. Per parcel, not always. If your products are small, a narrow roll wastes less paper.

What GSM honeycomb paper should I buy?
For fragile e-commerce items such as glass, ceramics, cosmetics bottles and electronics, 80–90 GSM is the common choice. Lighter paper is cheaper but tears more easily during expansion.

What is burst factor (BF) in honeycomb paper?
Burst factor measures how much pressure paper takes before it bursts, relative to its weight. Higher BF means stronger paper at the same GSM, which matters when the mesh has to hold heavy or sharp-edged items.

Do honeycomb paper prices include GST?
It varies by seller, so always ask whether a quote is with or without GST. If you are GST-registered, ask for a proper tax invoice so you can claim input tax credit.

Why are some honeycomb paper rolls so cheap?
Common reasons are lower GSM, weaker paper, stretched length quoted instead of flat length, or prices shown without GST and delivery. Ask for the specs in writing and run a trial before buying in bulk.
